Best Shampoo For Keratin Treated Hair & Guide!

Keratin is a protein that helps forming nails and hair structure. It encapsulates the hair fiber, making it stronger, improving elasticity. Additionally, hair gets hydrated and shiny.

Even though keratin is naturally produced by the hair, the level of production diminishes with time. The situation gets worse if the hair is submitted to chemical and sun damage for example.

What Is Keratin Treatment?

The keratin treatment is a type of Brazilian blow dry that disciplines, smoothes the hair, taming frizz and straightening it. There are different types of keratin treatments, some of them will only help you reduce hair volume without taking the curls away.

The permanent Keratin treatment contains formal treatment which is a chemical treatment, so you need to take proper care of your keratin treated hair, using specific shampoos and treatments to help it stay healthier.

Do I Need A Shampoo For Keratin Hair?

Yes. The best shampoo for keratin treated hair is essential to maintain your keratin treated hair beautiful for longer. If you skip this rule and use a shampoo that’s not appropriate, you may end up stripping the treatment away, causing dryness and brittleness.

Here’s what happens when you get a proper shampoo:

  • Hair gets shinier and stronger
  • Prevents or minimize scalp irritation
  • Protects coloration
  • Prevents Dryness and Frizz

What Shampoo Is Best For Keratin Hair?

From now on, sulfate-free shampoos will be your best friends on this keratin treatment journey.

At the same time, you should avoid Sodium and chloride shampoos as well. It can reduce the natural production of oil and leave your keratin treated hair dry and opaque.

In addition, sodium chloride can diminish the effect of keratin. In a nutshell here’s quick list of what you should avoid:

My Review

This shampoo took a little longer for me to start seeing results. However, the hair was bouncing and shiny, so I liked it.

Argan Oil Shampoo and Hair Conditioner Set - Argan Jojoba Almond Oil Peach Kernel Keratin - Sulfate Free - For All Hair Types
Best shampoo and conditioner for keratin treated hair

I have noticed a significant reduction of frizz, even though not entirely, but the effects were there. So in this quest, I can say I was pretty happy.

As I have voluminous hair, I noticed it got even more voluminous. It’s alright, though, as I still liked how it looked.

Another thing that I liked about this shampoo is how it makes it easy to untangle the hair.

As I felt my hair soft, I can start untangling with the fingers in the shower and then with a comb.

I tried this shampoo with and without conditioner and a hair treatment mask, and the results got even better, as I expected.

The way I used it is the following:

I gently massage the scalp, and instead of circular motion, I move my fingers back and forth. Then I wait around 3 minutes and rinse again.

As I have too dried hair,  I prefer to use a conditioner and hair treatment mask after I wash my hair, as I feel that this helps improve my hair condition.

It claims to be a very gentle nourishing shampoo and is suitable for all hair types, especially for those hairs in need of extra care, as in the case of keratin-treated hair.

I will have three reasons why I have picked this one as the tops of the tops:

Argan Oil to the rescue

My review

ArtNaturals Organic Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner Set - Sulfate Free - Infused with Keratin

After using this shampoo for two months, I noticed my hair gradually improved, but it was not overnight.

The progress starts to build up slowly, so it’s good to stick with the treatment and be patient, so you can begin to see plausible results.

I had also noticed improvements when I applied olive oil to my hair 2 to 8  hours before washing.

This trick works well with any shampoo.

The situation of my hair:

My hair is dry. I am styling it with a flat iron most of the time because of volume and frizz.

This shampoo didn’t eliminate all my frizz and volume, but it was ok.

That shampoo tamed around 60% of my frizz, and I noticed my hair was softer.

In addition to the oil tip I gave you, there are some other things you can do to maximize results.

One tip is to use a conditioner. Almost 99% of the time, I have a better and more optimized result when I do it.

Try to use a proper conditioner for very dry hair. I like one from Biolage Oil Mitic, which my mom and I love!

The other tip is to have a dedicated hair mask for your hair type; 99% of the time, a high-quality masque can make your hair much softer.

I am very in love with the Keune keratin treatment mask and have been using this one for a month now—nothing to complain about, just goodies.

The way I wash

I dilute the shampoo with a bit of water. I always do that because I feel it is less abrasive.

This shampoo won’t lather too much, so don’t worry, it’s still doing its job.

The cons

The cons about this shampoo are that it took a while for me to start seeing the results. But the result is good, so far.

4. HASK KERATIN PROTEIN Shampoo and Conditioner Set

Our next Best shampoo for keratin treatment contains argan oil and is excellent, in my opinion (and has thousands of great reviews out there).

This shampoo might be ideal for damaged, over-processed hair, and some people call it a “miracle” that restores and strengthens parched frizzy hair, especially curly hair.

HASK KERATIN PROTEIN Shampoo and Conditioner Set Smoothing - Color safe, gluten-free, sulfate-free, paraben-free

  • gently cleansing
  • leaves even unruly hair softer and shinier
  • Don’t strip hair natural oils

Cons

  • It is not very easy to spread on the hair
  • People have complained about the small
  • It can be too heavy for fine hair

5. Pantene Sulfate Free Shampoo & Conditioner Kit

Here we have apremium shampoo that you can use on keratin treated hair or any other hair that needs an extra touch of care.

This version is sulfate-free, so you can expect it won’t ruin your keratin treatment. For better results, you can use the conditioner of the same line.

Pantene

The Pantene sulfate-free shampoo contains Pro-V nutrient combined with rose extract is gentle and leaves the hair softer and smoother.

If combined with its conditioner (also sulfate-free), you’ll notice hair gets more malleable, easier to detangle, and hydrated.

This Pantene shampoo is sulfate-free, paraben-free; there are no dyes in the composition, no mineral oils, and is silicone-free.

Cons

Some people have complained about the package. To be more specific, people have complained about the pump, but they love the smell.

Pros

In a nutshell, here’s what to expect from Pantene rose water:

  • Great smell and stays on the hair for 2 or 3 days
  • Soft, hydrated hair
  • Gentle nourishment
  • Makes detangling easier
  • To have potentialized results, use the conditioner with the shampoo kit.
  • sulfate free shampoo
  • Don’t strip hair natural oils

6. Free & Clear Hair Shampoo Fragrance

I like the concept of the Free & Clear Hair Shampoo.

It is Fragrance-free, Gluten-free, and sulfate free shampoo, designed especially for Sensitive Skin, which you can use in keratin treated hair.

I know this is the least important thing, but I also like the bottle a lot, as It reminds me of a clean natural product.

This shampoo is for those who want to get something natural, exceptionally gently after keratin treatments.

In the case you have a sensitive scalp, you will love it.

As you will see on the package, it clearly states that this shampoo is free from dyes, has no fragrance, no masking fragrance, it’s PH balanced and dermatologically tested.

Here’s the complete list

  • Sulfate-free
  • Dye Free, fragrance-free, masking fragrance-free lanolin-free, paraben-free, formaldehyde-free, and other preservatives that can irritate.
  • Phosphate-free
  • Protein-Free
  • Gluten-free
  • Don’t strip hair natural oils

This shampoo can be used on all hair types, but especially for those with sensitive scalp and dry hair because its formula contains oil control agents.

The hair will get clean and easy to detangle, and you can experience it becoming shinier. However, it is not a nourishing shampoo.

It will work great on keratin-treated hair because it has no harsh ingredients and will help you maintain your treatment, but it washes.

For the cons, many people have reported that this shampoo is difficult to spread, making you have to use a lot of product until you feel your hair is clean.

For this reason, you will need (in most cases), to use this shampoo in conjunction with a conditioner, deep conditioner, and/or a very moisturizing hair mask.

Knowing this, use this product if your hair and scalp tend to get very oily, itchy, or irritated because it will nourish your scalp but will leave your hair dry if you have chemically treated hair.

7. Redken Color Extend Magnetics Shampoo

Now I bring an option for those with color treated hair (we cannot forget about you!).

The Redken Color Extend Magnetics Shampoo can also be an excellent option for you after performing a keratin treatment blowout.

I am saying this because it is sulfate-free, non-stripping, and lightweight shampoo, which helps seal the color while leaving it smooth, nourished, and strong.

Like any other shampoo, the results will be potentialized by the sulfate-free hair mask from the same line.

It’s suitable for all hair types, but use it only if you dye your hair frequently to enhance shine, prevent color from fading, and maintain color treated hair shinier for longer.

Tips For Washing keratin treated hair

After keratin treatment, it is best to avoid deep cleansing shampoos (anti-residual) as they can strip off the treatment.

At the same time, don’t forget to deep condition and hair masques once a week to avoid damage from keratin treatments.

Hydrate your hair with moisturizing hair creams, and avoid bleaching in short intervals as it can cause breakage and other damages.

If the hair is already damaged, use restorative, reconstructive hair masques and don’t do another Keratin treatment until the hair recovers. Another tip is to avoid sleeping with wet hair as it changes the hair structure.

Tips To Take Care Of Keratin Hair

If you want to take good care of your keratin treated hair, it’s a great idea to invest in a shower filter. This is actually good advice for every one who wants to have better hair, as hard water can leave your hair dry and frizzy.

Also, remember to avoid beach and swimming pool baths, to help your treatment to stay longer.

Another tip is not to wash your hair so often in the beginning and keep it dry for as long as you can. If you feel your hair is too oily, you can use a dry shampoo.

When you wash your hair make sure to use a lot of conditioner, hydrate and deep condition regularly to your hair to get stronger and shinier.

Never sleep with the hair wet and opt for a silk pillow to help you get rid of excess frizz.

FAQ: Best Keratin Shampoo

Is it ok to use a normal shampoo on my keratin hair?

No and you should avoid it as much as you can, as a proper shampoo will help you maintain your treatment for longer, preventing dryness and frizziness.

Can I wash keratin treated hair everyday?

You should avoid washing your hair everyday, only in the beginning when you have recently done the treatment. You can possibly start washing your hair every day after that. If you are afraid that washing your clothes too often may strip your treatment away, opt for a dry shampoo.

Is It Safe To Apply Keratin Treatment?

As any chemical treatment, it all depends on the professional and the quality of the product you are applying on your hair. But it is safe in most cases. Make sure the treatment does not contain formaldehyde or contains extremely low levels of it.
